The 7th SFG(A) traces its origins to the 77th Special Forces, constituted at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in September 1953 after the successes of the 1st Special Service Force, “The Devil’s Brigade,” in World War II. In 1960, the 77th was reorganized and designated as the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne).

  • Vietnam War Era: In 1961, 7th SFG(A) Soldiers deployed to Vietnam to advise the South Vietnamese army. The first Medal of Honor awarded in the Republic of South Vietnam went to Captain Roger H.C. Donlon of SFOD-A 726 for his leadership during the Battle of Nam Dong. Throughout the 1960s, 7th SFG(A) also participated in Operation White Star in Laos and Thailand, as well as Operation Power Pack in the Dominican Republic. On 21 November 1971, members of the Group took part in Operation Ivory Coast, the raid on Son Tay Prisoner of War Camp in North Vietnam.

  • Central America, 1980s: 7th SFG(A) played a key role supporting democratic governments against Communist insurgencies. In 1981, 3rd Battalion deployed from Panama to El Salvador, spearheading counterinsurgency operations throughout the decade. In December 1989, Soldiers participated in Operation Just Cause in Panama, followed by peacekeeping under Operation Promote Liberty.

  • 1990s: The Group focused on counternarcotics and peacekeeping across Latin America. Key missions included Operations Safe Haven and Safe Passage (Panama, 1994), Operation Safe Border (Ecuador/Peru, 1995), and Colombia-based initiatives such as the C2I program and Carabineros training (1998–2004), critical to the success of Plan Colombia.

  • Global War on Terror (2001–present): Following September 11, 2001, 7th SFG(A) deployed worldwide in support of the Global War on Terror. From 2002 to 2019, it maintained a near-permanent presence in Afghanistan, conducting thousands of joint and multi-national operations. Between 2003–2008, the Group played a central role in Operation Willing Spirit, leading to the rescue of three U.S. defense contractors held captive by the FARC for five years.

Today, the 7th SFG(A) continues to operate within USSOUTHCOM and USNORTHCOM areas of responsibility while supporting other combatant commands as required. Soldiers, civilians, and families of the Group remain committed to executing missions and contingency operations worldwide.
